Teachable Tunes Tuesday

Engineering is transferable across content areas. “But you don’t have to take my word for it!” Kudos to Burton and Reading Rainbow on their success, I’d like to think that it was my tweet from March 3rd that got him back on the Reading Rainbow campaign trail. At any rate, engineering education has an opportunity to impact any English or Language Arts and reading literacy program. How? Well I’m glad you asked, if we are exploring history or rhyme scheme we can always address the music from a particular time era or identify meaningful word-play. We can also ask kids to write their own work addressing the parallels between the song and their own life or current events. Not seeing the engineering connection? Engineers have to be quality communicators that understand how history effects current work. By understanding what has been done previously, and why, they are able to innovate and expand on prior knowledge. Why is this song from the 80s still relevant today, yet we hear no songs like it on mainstream radio? What kind of people are the early “Gen Y’ers” and late “Generation X’ers” because of hearing songs like “The Chant has Begun” by Level 42? Ok, so maybe this song wasn’t mainstream at all but it’s still a teachable tune! Oh, and speaking of tunes we’ll be Live from The Hardware Store on August 7th 11:30 – 12:30 PM so bookmark our links and tune-in!

Here are the lyrics:

The spirit of the people
The spirit of the people
The spirit of the people
The rhythm has begun

The spirit of the people
The spirit of the people
The spirit of the people
The rhythm has begun

The spirit of the people
The spirit of the people
The spirit of the people
The rhythm has begun

The spirit of the people
The spirit of the people
The spirit of the people
The rhythm has begun

Old men with their protocol
Lead us off to war
Sometimes we don’t even know
What we’re fighting for
Marching to the beat of their drum, yeah yeah

Leaders we no longer trust
Told too many lies
The promises they made to us
Were never realized
Hear me now the chant has begun

Nowhere left to turn
No-one left to turn to
Voices raised in anger
They don’t have the answer
Our whole world’s in danger

Oil slicks on the ebbing tide
Progress out of hand
Blind men choke on swallowed pride
Heads down in the sand
Don’t wanna see the damage they’ve done, oh no

Trees destroyed by acid rain
Falling from the skies
When our children place the blame
Who will tell them, why? Yeah
Hear me now the chant has begun

Why is love so rare?
All this talk of warfare
Too much blind destruction
Follow love’s instructions
Now the chant has begun

The spirit of the people
The spirit of the people
The spirit of the people
The rhythm has begun

The spirit of the people
The spirit of the people
The spirit of the people
The rhythm has begun

Make your choice there’s no escape
Add your voice, the chant has begun
